Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Price Variations.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

157 Ms Clune asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the way in which she has responded to a survey conducted by the Chambers of Commerce of Ireland which showed a wide variation in the cost of petrol across the counties; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [28392/98]

Variations in prices are to be expected in a competitive market. Consumers can and do become aware of these variations. Where significant variations in prices occur consumer power will send a message to the market.

I note that the Chambers of Commerce of Ireland in releasing the results of their survey before Christmas highlighted the advice of their President to motorists "when filling up, shop around". I agree with that advice.
