Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Communications Services.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

225 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the number of ministerial orders made under section 4(9) of the Telecommunications (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1996; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1780/99]

Section 4 (9) of the Telecommunications (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1996 provides that the Minister may from time to time specify public service requirements and those requirements so specified shall be published in the Iris Oifigiúil. Under section 4 (10) of that Act, the Director of Telecommunications Regulation shall include these requirements in licences for mobile and personal communications services and systems. No such public service requirements have to date been specified. However, I am satisfied that licences for mobile and personal communications services and systems which have been issued or prepared since the commencement of those provisions of the Act on 30 June 1997 include appropriate public service requirements.
