Written Answers. - Vehicle Registration Tax.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

502 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, he has to make an exemption to the increased VRT rates for large cars which operate on LPG; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1542/99]

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

509 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Finance if he will exempt cars operating on liquid petroleum gas from the increase in vehicle registration tax in view of the environmental benefit of such cars; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1703/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 502 and 509 together.

The restructuring of the vehicle registration tax, announced in the budget of 2 December 1998 took effect from 1 January 1999. Therefore cars registered with effect from that date will be subject to the revised rates, if above 1,400 cc.

I have no plans to make an exemption for cars operating on liquid petroleum gas.
