Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Curriculum Development.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

551 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Health and Children his views on whether the introduction of cardio pulmonary resuscitation as a curriculum subject for all secondary schools should be actively encouraged; the discussions, if any, officials from his Department have held with the Department of Education and Science; if he will promote this proposal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1472/99]

I am in favour of as many students as possible being familiar with cardio pulmonary resuscitation techniques. My Department is represented on the National Council for Curriculum Assessment course committee who are devising a broad social personal health education curriculum for second level schools. I will ask that the issue of cardio pulmonary resuscitation techniques be given consideration in the development of this syllabus and in its forthcoming implementation.
