Question:

704 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of people on a provisional driving licence for at least five and ten years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1585/99]

The information requested is not available in my Department. More detailed statistical information on driver licences will be available when the computerised national driver file currently being developed is completed. However, as indicated in the Government Strategy for Road Safety 1998-2002 it is estimated that approximately 337,000 persons, some 24 per cent of the total driving population, hold provisional driving licences.
