Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Monuments.

John McGuinness

Question:

767 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if her Department will examine the structure of Carlow Castle, Carlow town, with a view to carrying out some maintenance and preservation work in 1999; if her Department will prepare a scheme of work which will highlight the castle and make it more accessible in view of the developments taking place around the castle; and if her Department will discuss with local groups the promotion and inclusion of this site as part of a county tourism package for Carlow. [28344/98]

A conservation, landscaping and presentation programme for Carlow Castle will be prepared by Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department, this year. The programme will also make provision for public access to the monument. It is intended to commence work on this programme in 2000.

In the meantime, officials of my Department are available to discuss the presentation of this site with local groups.
