Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

803 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the serious assault inflicted on a person (details supplied) in County Sligo on 4 January 1998; if his attention has further been drawn to the outcome of the Garda investigations into the matter; if the persons responsible for the assault will be prosecuted; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1235/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that on 4 January 1998, as a result of an altercation on Lord Edward Street, Sligo, the person to whom the Deputy refers received a blow to the face, fell heavily and hit his head on the footpath. He was subsequently admitted to hospital for treatment and was released on 21 January 1998.

I am further informed that following a thorough investigation by the Garda a file was forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions and that a youth has since been formally cautioned under the provisions of the juvenile division programme.
