Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Child Pornography.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

813 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to a report which states that Ireland is second among EU countries in the number of attempts to access child pornographic websites on the Internet; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1353/99]

I am aware of the existence of this report, which was commissioned by the European Union and is being carried out by the Focus on Children organisation.

Following recent media reporting on certain aspects of the report prior to its publication, senior officials from my Department and from the Garda authorities met with the director of Focus on Children, Mr. Seán Lawless, and requested a copy of the report so that its full implications for this country can be assessed by my Department and the Garda. The report is still awaited.
