Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Richard Bruton

Question:

867 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if the new package announced for children with special educational needs, committing additional teaching resources and carer attendance, will offer any additional options to children with specific learning difficulties, including dyslexia; and, if so, the way in which he advises parents seeking additional teaching sup port to pursue their entitlements under this scheme. [28310/98]

Children with specific learning difficulties may benefit from the measures to which the Deputy refers where such support is deemed necessary on the basis of professional assessment reports.

Applications for additional support services for children with special educational needs, including children with specific learning difficulties, should be made by schools to the special education section of my Department. Parents can also contact the special education section with any inquiries they have regarding this initative.

A draft circular and an information note are currently being finalised by my Department and it is hoped that they will issue to all schools before the end of February. These documents will contain information for schools on how to apply for appropriate resource teaching and-or child care support for pupils with special educational needs arising from disabilities.
