Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Remedial Teaching Services.

P. J. Sheehan

Question:

869 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Education and Science the national schools in the Cork South-West constituency which have a remedial teaching service; the number of pupils involved; the schools which do not have remedial teachers; the number of pupils in these schools who require but do not have remedial teacher access; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28330/98]

The information requested by the Deputy is not available on a constituency basis.

Of the 359 primary schools in County Cork, 292 schools involving 47,832 pupils have access to a remedial service. There are 67 primary schools in the county, involving 3,951 pupils, which currently do not have access to a remedial teaching service.

I recently announced a major initiative to tackle educational disadvantage at all levels. As part of this initiative, a remedial teacher service will be made available to all primary schools with effect from September 1999. Mainstream schools with a pupil-teacher ratio of below 10:1 and which currently have no remedial teacher may apply for a service where they can demonstrate the particular needs of their pupils.

Details of the 292 primary schools in County Cork which have a remedial service and the 67 schools which are currently without the service are being forwarded to the Deputy.

John Bruton

Question:

870 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will appoint a remedial teacher on a shared basis to serve the needs of Dunderry, Robinstown and Kilbride national schools (details supplied); if he will deal with this request urgently; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28331/98]

I recently announced a major initiative to tackle education disadvantage at all levels. As part of this initiative, a remedial teacher service will be made available to all primary schools, including the schools to which the Deputy refers, with effect from September 1999. Mainstream national schools with a pupil teacher ratio of below 10:1 and which currently have no remedial service may apply for a service where they can demonstrate the particular needs of their pupils.
