Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Amalgamation.

Michael Creed

Question:

883 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the proposed amalgamation between Coláiste Charibre VEC and Maria Immaculata secondary school, Dunmanway, County Cork; where the new school will be located; and the type of school it will be. [28389/98]

Discussions have been held over the last few years with County Cork VEC and the Daughters of Charity order regarding the development of a single post-primary school in the centre. The indications are that the provision of a single school in Dunmanway would have general acceptance locally.

The main issues remaining to be resolved include the location of the proposed school and the type of management it should have. Ongoing discussions between my Department, the VEC and the order with a view to identifying the most suitable site for the school are at an advanced stage and should be concluded shortly. The question of type of management will be finalised when the site issue is resolved.
