Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

Liz McManus

Question:

886 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education and Science if the shortfall of nine days will be waived for pension purposes for a person (details supplied) in County Wicklow in view of her longstanding service as a teacher for 35 years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28436/98]

The amount of a teacher's pension is related to pensionable service and to pay at retirement. Pensionable service is reckoned in years and fractions of years and every day of pensionable service is taken into account.

In the case referred to by the Deputy, the teacher's total pensionable service amounts to 34 years and 356 days. There is provision for actual teaching service to be increased by an additional period where a teacher retires on grounds of disability or under the early retirement scheme. The teacher in question retired under strand two of the early retirement scheme and her pensionable service includes two added years, the maximum additional period allowable under that strand.
