Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Recognition.

Question:

917 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason John Scottus school, 49 Northumberland Road, Dublin 4, has not been granted recognition in view of the fact it submitted an appeal in 1997 but has not received a decision on its case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1203/99]

Consideration of this particular application has proven to be more complex than normal in so far as John Scottus does not fit in to any of the established categories of primary school. Accordingly, while I am anxious to promote diversity in line with the terms of the Education Act, I wish to be fully satisfied as to ethos and curricular provision in each case. I am conscious also of the High Court proceeding initiated by a private primary school in County Clare, the outcome of which will have an important bearing on my Department's future approach to the recognition of such schools.

I well appreciate that John Scottus school is anxious at this stage to see an early outcome to its application and I can assure the school authorities that the matter is being dealt with by my Department as expeditiously as possible.
