Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Maintenance Grants.

Liam Aylward

Question:

952 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will review the application for grants to Carlow VEC by a person (details supplied) in County Carlow taking into account the documentation submitted with the applications with a view to having the grants approved. [1450/99]

Under the terms of the 1998 maintenance grants scheme for post leaving certificate students, a candidate's reckonable income for the purposes of the award of a grant is the candidate's gross income from all sources and that of his/her parents or guardians where applicable.

I understand from Carlow VEC that the reckonable income in this case exceeds the income limit for the payment of a maintenance grant. However, documentation has been submitted by the applicant regarding a possible change in circumstances which may affect the reckonable income in this case in the future. County Carlow VEC will review the application in April 1999 when it will re-assess the reckonable income for the year ended 5 April 1999.
