Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Willie Penrose

Question:

978 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science if the recently announced changes by his Department, in relation to financial aid for the purchase of sites to construct school buildings and an increase in grant aid for the construction of such schools, will apply to the approval recently given by his Department for the provision of a new school at Coralstown, Mullingar, County Westmeath; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1569/99]

On 10 January, I announced a new initiative on school ownership at primary and post primary levels. Under this initiative, the option of State ownership will be available to the patrons of new schools. In my statement of 10 January, I indicated that discussions would be held with all interested parties on the operational arrangements for the new initiative. To this end, a working group has been established in my Department and is currently examining the implementation details. When this work is finalised, my Department will be in a position to advance individual projects, such as Coralstown national school, Mullingar, County Westmeath.
