Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

1010 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received an application from St. John Bosco senior boy's school, Navan Road, Dublin 7, requesting funding for window replacements; the date on which the application was received; the reason for the delay in dealing with it; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the board of management considers that the windows are a safety hazard for pupils; if he is in a position to approve funding; if so, the amount in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1911/99]

An application for replacement windowns was first submitted by the school to my Department in April 1996, as part of an application for various improvement works required by the school. However, due to financial constraints at the time, it was not possible to approve grant aid. The school readdressed the issue with my Department in November 1998, expressing its concern about the safety of the existing windows. My Department has requested a technical report including estimated costs and when this is to hand, the issue of grant assistance will be addressed and my Department will be in further contact with the school management.
