Vol. 499 No. 4

Written Answers. - Genetically Modified Organisms.

John Gormley

Question:

139 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he was lobbied by Secretary of State, Mr. Sandy Berger, in relation to genetically modified crops during his recent visit to the United States; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1900/99]

I have not been lobbied directly by the US National Security Adviser, Mr. Sandy Berger, in relation to genetically modified crops. However, during a visit to the US in March 1998, the US interest in four genetically modified products subject to approval under Community Directive 90/220EEC for placing on the market in the EU was raised with the Taoiseach by Mr. Berger. This was conveyed to me by the Taoiseach's office in the context of Ireland's position on the marketing within the EU of the four products involved.
