Vol. 499 No. 4

Written Answers. - Driving Licences.

Michael Finucane

Question:

142 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will issue a driving licence to a person (details supplied) in County Limerick in view of the fact the person has been out of the country and has a United States licence which is due to expire in 2000 and his current driving licence expired in December 1998. [2911/99]

Under the Road Traffic Act, 1961, and the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations, 1989 to 1997, it is a matter for the appropriate licensing authority, in this case Cork County Council and not my Department to determine the eligibility of a person for a driving licence and to issue licences.

There is no arrangement in place for the exchange of US driving licences for Irish driving licences.
