Vol. 499 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Transport.

John Perry

Question:

161 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if persons (details supplied) in County Sligo will have school transport extended to their home for safety and health reason in view of the fact that both the parent and daughter are asthmatics; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2998/99]

The family in question resides 0.7 miles from the existing pick-up point and has a very reasonable level of service.

Special transport arrangements on medical grounds may be considered by my Department where pupils are severely medically handicapped and cannot make their own way to the pick-up point. Applicants for such transport are required to submit a medical form completed by their family doctor. My Department forwards the application to the medical adviser, who determines whether the appropriate conditions apply.

An official form for this purpose has been sent to the family in question. On receipt of the relevant information the application will be examined, and the Deputy will be advised of the outcome.
