Vol. 499 No. 4

Written Answers. - Gaeltacht Areas.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

78 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the official Department definition of the word "Gaeltacht"; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2829/99]

For the purposes of the Ministers and Secretaries (Amendment) Act, 1956, which established the Department of the Gaeltacht, the Gaeltacht comprises the areas for the time being determined to be Gaeltacht areas by order made by the Government under section 2 of that Act. That is still the position. To date four orders have been made, that is in 1956, 1967, 1974 and 1982.
