Vol. 499 No. 4

Written Answers. - Genetically Modified Organisms.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

95 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the procedures involved to control and regulate the presence of genetically modified foods in animal feeds; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2882/99]

Only genetically modified organisms, GMOs, which have been authorised under EU procedures can be marketed in the Community. Directive 90/220/EEC, on the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms has been transposed into Irish law under S.I. No. 345 of 1994. This is an interim arrangement and will be replaced in due course by an EU directive which will be specific for animal feedingstuffs. The Environmental Protection Agency is the responsible body for the regulations in Ireland.
