Vol. 499 No. 4

Written Answers. - National Lottery.

Brendan Kenneally

Question:

122 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for Finance the progress, if any, made in bringing the national lottery within the remit of the Ombudsman pursuant to his letter to Deputy Kenneally on 30 January 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2871/99]

I indicated to the Deputy in the letter referred to that proposals to extend the remit of the Ombudsman were being considered in my Department and that the possibility of bringing the national lottery within the extended remit would be examined in that context. That examination has now been completed and the Government's decisions in this regard were recently announced. As a commercial entity, I do not think it would be appropriate to include the national lottery within the Ombudsman's remit and I propose, therefore, to take no action in this regard.
