Vol. 499 No. 5

Written Answers. - Irish Sailing Association.

Bernard Allen

Question:

111 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he has recently met the Irish Sailing Association; if he has received its strategic plan; the moneys sought and allocated in 1998 and 1999 in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3114/99]

I have not had any formal meet ings with the Irish Sailing Association (ISA) in recent times. However, at my request, Mr. John Treacy, executive chairman of the Irish Sports Council, has met with each of the national governing bodies of sport (NGBs) currently funded by my Department as part of an ongoing programme of meetings to monitor progress in the development of their respective sporting organisations. In November 1998 I hosted a one day conference for all NGBs to update them on policy developments. This conference was attended by representatives of the ISA.

I received a copy of the association's strategic plan last year, which has been examined by officials of my Department and the Irish Sports Council. The ISA applied for £1,000 in respect of strategic planning in 1998 and this amount was included in the annual grant to the association in 1998. As the ISA's strategic plan was completed in 1998 the association did not request any funding for this purpose in 1999.
