Vol. 499 No. 5

Written Answers. - Rape Victims' Representation.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

32 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when it is intended to introduce legislation providing for separate legal representation of rape victims during trials; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3038/99]

Liz McManus

Question:

47 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to provide separate legal representation for victims of rape; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3067/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 32 and 47 together.

There is a commitment in An Action Programme for the Millennium to introduce separate legal representation in court for complainants of rape. I expect to be bringing proposals on the matter before Government next week and I hope to be in a position to make an announcement after that.
