Vol. 499 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Retirements.

Jack Wall

Question:

39 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of Garda chief superintendents and superintendents who have resigned their position or indicated their intention to resign within the past 12 months; the steps, if any, being taken to address the loss of senior officers from the force; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3042/99]

A total of four superintendents retired voluntarily, i.e., before the compulsory age for retirement, from the Garda Síochána during 1998. Two chief superintendents have given notice of retirement, again before the compulsory retirement age, in the near future. All of the resulting vacancies have been or will be filled. The number of voluntary retirements from the force is not considered excessive but is monitored on a regular basis.
