Vol. 499 No. 5

Written Answers. - Violence Against Women.

Michael Ferris

Question:

50 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the specific action, if any, planned as a result of recommendations of the task force on violence against women; the progress made in this regard by the national steering committee and the interdepartmental committee established as a result of these recommendations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3069/99]

The first report of the National Steering Committee on Violence Against Women will be published shortly. The purpose of the report is to illustrate the developments and progress which has been achieved across a broad range of areas since the establishment of the committee in December 1997. It concentrates on the initiatives which have been undertaken by the various State, semi-State and non-Governmental organisations.

I understand that there have been a number of significant developments including, the establishment of eight regional committees on violence against women, the development of a public awareness campaign and the establishment of a sub-committee to look at the accessibility of telephone based services.

I understand that the report will be published in the next few weeks and I will ensure that the Deputy receives a copy.
