Vol. 499 No. 5

Written Answers. - Employment Equality Act.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

61 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when he will implement the Employment Equality Act, 1998; if suitable premises have been obtained for the Equality Authority; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3058/99]

Work is on schedule in my Department to put in place the infrastructure for equality provided in the Act, namely, the Equality Authority and the office of Director of Equality Investigations. The Commissioners of Public Works have agreed terms to lease a new building currently nearing completion at Clonmel Place, off Harcourt Street, Dublin 2. The premises will house both of the new organisations in separate self-contained offices, each with its own hall door at street level. Arrangements to put in place the staffing and other resource requirements in the new organisations are also in train.

I cannot yet be firm about the timescale for implementing the Employment Equality Act, 1998, but my Department is working to be in a position to begin the process about the middle of the year.
