Vol. 500 No. 1

Written Answers - Medical Cards.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

217 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will direct the Eastern Health Board to issue a medical card on strict medical grounds to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 in view of her special circumstances and need for treatment. [3494/99]

The determination of eligibility for medical cards is the responsibility of the chief executive officer of the appropriate health board. I, as Minister for Health and Children, do not have a function in the issue of medical cards to individuals. The determination of eligibility of the person concerned rests with the chief executive officer of the Eastern Health Board and I understand that he has reviewed the application and decided that a medical card should not issue in this case.
