Vol. 500 No. 1

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Michael Noonan

Question:

401 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Education and Science if qualified Montessori teachers (details supplied) will be eligible for substitute and permanent posts in primary schools from September 1999; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3264/99]

The Montessori teachers referred to by the Deputy are recognised by my Department to teach in certain special schools for the mentally handicapped, the emotionally disturbed and the hearing impaired. In addition these teachers are also recognised as fully qualified for substitute teaching purposes in mainstream primary schools. However, they are not eligible for permanent positions in mainstream primary schools.
