Vol. 500 No. 1

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

414 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will make a special concession to ensure that Asdee national school, Listowel, County Kerry, will return its present staffing level of four teachers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3602/99]

The staffing of national schools for a particular year is determined by the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous year. The enrolment of Asdee national school on 30 September 1999 was 85 pupils. Under the existing staffing schedule, this is insufficient for the retention of the fourth teaching post at the school. However, I should point out to the Deputy that I have not as yet made final decisions regarding the staffing allocations which will apply in primary schools in the 1999-2000 school year. When decisions have been taken in this matter, my officials will examine the position of Asdee national school and correspond with the school's managerial authorities in the matter.
