Vol. 500 No. 1

Written Answers - Live Register.

Jim Higgins

Question:

90 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Taoiseach the number of persons unemployed in Claremorris, County Mayo, for the latest date for which figures are available; and the age categories in this regard. [3233/99]

Definitive statistics on the level of unemployment are based on the labour force survey and, since its introduction, on the quarterly national household survey. Results from these surveys are not available for towns or catchment areas of social welfare offices. The monthly live register figures include data on claimants of unemployment benefit, unemployment assistance and other registrants classified by local office of registration. However, the live register is not an accurate indicator of the level of unemployment.

At the end of December 1998, there were 683 people signing on at the Claremorris social welfare office, of whom 88 were aged under 25 and 595 were aged 25 or over. Corresponding figures for January 1999 will be published on Friday, 12 February.

A more detailed age breakdown of the live register is published in April and October of each year and the relevant figures for Claremorris in October 1998 are set out in the following table:
