Question:

190 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Science the pupil-teacher ratio at primary and post primary levels; the average class size in this regard; and the comparative figures for the most recent years for which figures are available for other EU and OECD countries. [3829/99]

The pupil teacher ratio in primary schools in the current school year is 21.2 to 1.

At second level, when all pupils and teaching posts are taken into account, the actual pupil teacher ratio is currently of the order of 15.4 : 1.

Details of the pupil teacher ratio in other OECD and EU member states is contained in the table following.

The average class size in primary schools in the 1997-98 school year was 26.1.

Data relating to average class size in second level schools side is not readily available.

Data regarding average class sizes in both primary schools and second level schools in OECD and EU member states is not available.

The data hereunder relates to the 1995/96 school year and was published in December 1998.
