Vol. 500 No. 2

Written Answers. - Fee Charging Schools.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

192 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of fee-charging schools at post primary level in respect of which State funding is paid; the location by county of each school; and the level and total amount of funding paid to these schools, or for their use, in the past school year. [3831/99]

There are fifty-seven fee charging second level schools recognised by my Department. Information concerning the location of fee- paying schools is set out in the attached tabular statement.

My Department meets the salary cost of sanctioned teachers in fee charging schools and this amounted to approximately £30 million in 1998. Fee charging schools do not receive the per capita grant in respect of their students nor do they receive other supports to which schools in the free education scheme are entitled.

In the case of Protestant schools, all of which are fee charging, a block grant of £3.1 million was paid in 1998 to the Secondary Education Committee for distribution among needier Protestant children to enable them to attend a Protestant school. In addition, these schools are eligible for all grants payable under the free education scheme with the exception of the per capita grant. The amount paid in 1998 amounted to £150,000 approximately.

Capital resources paid to these schools amounted to approximately £300,000 in 1998.
