Vol. 500 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

80 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will allocate a co-ordinator to the Special Learning Support Project, Southside Partnership, 45 Upper George's Street, Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3684/99]

I am not in a position at present to allocate a co-ordinator post to the project in question. To the extent that teacher posts become available for allocation, they are primarily focused on addressing needs in the in-school situation. Such allocations can take the form of remedial teachers, resource teachers, concessionary teachers and home/school/community liaison posts.

I understand that schools in the partnership area in question are already in receipt of a significant range of special support teachers. However, many other schools are in need of such services and it is necessary that their needs be addressed as a priority. I assure the Deputy that the project to which he refers will be fully considered if co-ordinator posts become available for allocation in the future.
