Vol. 500 No. 4

Written Answers. - Internet Crime.

David Stanton

Question:

317 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the action, if any, he has taken, or will take, to detect and close down fraudulent schemes operated on the Internet; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4444/99]

The detection and prosecution of fraud offences on the Internet presents unique law enforcement challenges due to the nature of the technology involved. The Garda Síochána Computer Crime Investigation Unit which is attached to the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation is building a strong base of expertise in this area to meet these challenges.

The Deputy may also wish to note that I am currently preparing a Criminal Justice (Fraud Offences) Bill which will comprehensively reform the law on fraud and will take into account new developments in information technology. I expect to publish the Bill by the middle of the year.
