Vol. 500 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

353 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that children at St. Margaret's national school, Curracloe, County Wexford, must remain in their classroom from 9.20 a.m. to 3 p.m. on wet days owing to the absence of any shelter facility in the outdoor play area, that the school gym is of necessity used as a classroom; if his attention has been further drawn to the fact that up to 150 new dwellings in this school's catchment area are to be built in the near future, that the proposed one-room extension will be inadequate for the projected school population which is already near to the level requiring a fourth assistant teacher; if the accommodation needs of this school will be reviewed urgently in view of this situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3983/99]

Ivan Yates

Question:

387 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sanction a further extension to St. Margaret's national school (details supplied) in County Wexford in view of the ongoing overcrowding; and the timetable for the completion of these classrooms. [4326/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 353 and 387 together.

An extension to St. Margaret's national school, Curracloe, County Wexford, has already been approved by my Department and the school has been notified. The school applied subsequently for a revision to the proposed accommodation brief. In light of this, my Department is conducting a review of projected future enrolments. When this is completed, my Department will be in further touch with the school management. At this early stage it is not possible to give a realistic timetable for the completion of the works.
