Vol. 500 No. 6

Written Answers. - Public Transport.

Ivor Callely

Question:

35 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if new funding arrangements to CIE by multi annual public service contracts will specify an adequate late night bus service in Dublin; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4550/99]

The public service contracts, to be entered into by my Department and CIE, will specify the quantity and quality of public transport services to be provided by each of the three operating subsidiaries of CIE and the payment to be made by the State for these services.

While negotiations on the specific content of the public service contract with Dublin Bus are now close to being finalised I am not in a position to comment on the details at this stage. However, it is not anticipated that the initial contract will include provision for additional late night services. I hope to be in a position to report to the Government on the completed contract in the near future.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

36 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise further to Parliamentary Question No. 2 of 10 December 1998 the position in relation to the CIE viability plan; the reports, if any, she has received from the facilitator appointed in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4567/99]

The position with regard to the CIE restructuring negotiations is that agreement has been reached between management and unions in Dublin Bus while negotiations are ongoing in Bus Éireann and Iarnród Éireann. It is hoped that the negotiating process, being facilitated with the help of the Labour Relations Commission, can be concluded over the next few months.

The person referred to was appointed by CIE to assist the individual operating companies in the negotiations. While I have had discussions with him on the progress of these talks I have received no report from him.
