Question:

78 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise when all anticipated works for the improvement of the rail line from Enfield to Dublin will be completed with particular reference to achieving optimum safety standards; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4746/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 77 and 78 together.

Iarnród Éireann plans to have the whole infrastructure project on the Maynooth line completed on schedule by the end of 2000.

The current position is that earthworks, which are the first element of the trackwork on the Maynooth to Clonsilla section of the line, have just commenced. The installation of the new track will commence in the latter half of 1999.

With regard to safety standards on the route I refer the Deputy to the answer I gave today to Priority Question No. 1
