Vol. 501 No. 1

Written Answers. - Genetically Modified Organisms.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

67 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food his views on the recent fine against a company (details supplied) arising out of a prosecution taken by the United Kingdom Health and Safety Executive for beaches of safety rules; the controls, if any, in place in Ireland to ensure that genetically modified crops on trial sites are surrounded by pollen barriers; if there has been any reported breaches of safety rules in this jurisdiction; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5301/99]

I have no comment on the case mentioned. As regards trials on genetically modified crops, this is a matter for the Environmental Protection Agency which is the responsible authority in this country.
