Vol. 501 No. 1

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

92 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will give priority to organic applicants for suckler cow and ewe premium quotas in view of the demand for organic produce and the apparent lack of supply from this sector; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2454/99]

Distribution of suckler cow and ewe premium quota was based on historic production rights. However, producers who wish to acquire additional rights may also do so by purchasing additional quota.

Distribution of unused quota free of charge is decided each year by the Minister, following the recommendations of a representative review group. To date special priority has been given to smaller, less well off producers and to new entrants. Organic producers may qualify for quota under the terms of these criteria.
