Question:

125 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food his views on the EU Com mission proposals for price cuts in cereals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5469/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 118 and 125 together.

It is my view that the 20 per cent price reduction proposed by the Commission may be more than will be required in order to overcome GATT limits on subsidised exports.

The outcome of negotiations on Agenda 2000, clearly will be a major factor affecting continuing production of cereals. It is my aim to ensure that any price reduction adopted will be the minimum needed to permit unsubsidised exports, that producers will be fully compensated for the resulting reduction in returns from the market and that a viable cereal producing sector is maintained.
