Vol. 501 No. 2

Written Answers. - Údarás na Gaeltachta.

Michael Ring

Question:

307 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will ensure that there is a minimum of three elected members to represent Mayo's Gaeltachtaí on the proposed new board of Údarás na Gaeltachta; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5676/99]

The Údarás na Gaeltachta (Amendment) Bill, 1999, will include proposals to increase the number of constituencies for the purposes of elections to Údarás na Gaeltachta and to increase the number of persons to be elected to an tÚdarás. Under the proposals, the Gaeltacht areas of County Mayo will comprise a constituency in their own right for the first time. I am satisfied that the allocation of two seats to the Mayo constituency is appropriate, having regard to the population of that constituency and the population and proposed number of seats to be allo cated to the other large constituencies of the Gaeltacht.
