Vol. 501 No. 5

Written Answers. - Inservice Training.

Denis Naughten

Question:

134 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to provide continuing inservice training for the CSPE syllabus; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6547/99]

Support services are established for limited periods to provide inservice training for teachers involved in areas of substantial curriculum change. Following a pilot phase of inservice, a support service for CSPE teachers was set up at the beginning of the 1996-7 school year for a period of three years, finishing at the end of the current school year. To date, the support service has provided an extensive programme of high quality inservice and other support in a variety of ways for the teachers concerned, involving the application of substantial personnel and financial resources.

The question of support for CSPE teachers following the end of the current school year, apart from the usual ongoing inservice which is provided on the basis of particular proposals from course organisers, is being considered at present in the context of the demands of the overall in-career development programme.
