Question:

136 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received a request from the board of management of Rockchapel national school, County Cork, for the appointment of a resource teacher to facilitate persons (details supplied) in senior infants class; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the consultant ophthalmic surgeon who is attending to these visually impaired pupils has indicated that this appointment is very necessary; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6553/99]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that my Department recently sanctioned additional teaching provision to Rockchapel National School to assist school authorities cater for the special needs of the two pupils in question. A total of seven support teaching hours per week has been sanctioned to provide individual tuition to the pupils concerned. The visiting teacher for the visually impaired will continue to provide a service for these pupils.
