Vol. 501 No. 5

Written Answers. - Tax Liabilities.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

75 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Finance if he has made a complaint to the National Bureau of Fraud Investigation regarding tax revenue allegedly due to the Exchequer by a company (details supplied); if so, the progress to date of the investigation; and, if not, the reason therefor. [6522/99]

Pursuit of tax liability is primarily a matter for the Revenue Commissioners. I am informed by them that investigations are continuing and that it would be premature at this stage to consider the question of referring the results of those investigations to the National Bureau of Fraud Investigation.

The Deputy will be aware that the Committee of Public Accounts is also examining this matter and that the Comptroller and Auditor General has been asked to prepare a report pursuant to the resolution of Dáil Éireann of 17 December 1998 and the provisions of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Committees of the Houses of the Oireachtas (Special Provisions) Act, 1998. I understand work on the preparation of this report is ongoing.
