Vol. 501 No. 5

Written Answers. - Death Certificates.

Ivor Callely

Question:

90 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health and Children if a death certificate will be issued to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 5 in view of the fact her family require the certification without further delay. [6597/99]

The administration of the registration system is statutorily a matter for An tArd-Chláraitheoir (Registrar-General) of Births, Deaths and Marriages and for the Superintendent Registrar, Dublin (and Registrars) who operate under his general direction.

I have had inquiries made with An tArd-Chláraitheoir and he has informed me that the death adverted to by the Deputy was referred to the coroner. It will be a matter for the coroner to decide whether or not an inquest should be held in this particular instance and the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages must await the coroner's decision before registering the death. I understand that certain tests, which were required by the coroner, have now been completed and that the results have been furnished to the coroner's office, within the past couple of days. I also understand that these results should enable the coroner to decide whether an inquest is necessary, or if he is now in a position to notify the Registrar of the details requiring to be registered in the Register of Deaths.
