Vol. 501 No. 6

Written Answers. - Duty Free Sales.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

210 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance the discussions he had with his European counterparts in relation to the abolition of duty free sales for travel within the EU; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6265/99]

I wish to draw the Deputy's attention to the Adjournment Debate in this House on 11 February 1999 which dealt comprehensively with the issue of duty free sales for intra-Community travellers. I also draw his attention to the priority question which I answered on Thursday, 25 February 1999, where I set out the position in some detail.

I understand that item will be placed on the agenda for the ECOFIN meeting scheduled for 15 March 1999. I hope to have a further opportunity to discuss the issue with ministerial colleagues at that meeting and to report to Members thereafter.
