Question:

255 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the crisis situation some families suffer due to the fact their children suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and, due to the lack of facilities at Crumlin hospital, Dublin 12, the families have to seek private sessions in Clane, County Kildare; if his attention has further been drawn to the cost to the families involved; the action, if any, he will take in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Question:

256 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder service at Our Lady's Hospital, Crumlin, Dublin 12, has not been operational since December 1998 and that there are approximately 45 patients who have been left without a service and a further 55 awaiting inclusion to the service; if he will make a full-time senior post for these services at the hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6960/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 254, 255 and 256 together.

Services for children with attention deficit disorder, ADD, come within the remit of the child and psychiatric services of the health boards. Each of the health boards now has a dedicated child and adolescent psychiatric service available and through these established services children are assessed and provided with appropriate treatment and care.

A review of the child and adolescent psychiatric services is currently being undertaken by my Department. The special needs of children with conditions such as attention deficit disorder, ADD, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADHD, is being examined as part of the review.
With regard to the position in the Eastern Health Board, I understand that the recent departure of a key staff member from Our Lady's Hospital, Crumlin, has affected the provision of services for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Discussions have taken place between Our Lady's Hospital and the Eastern Health Board in relation to resuming the provision of services to children with this disorder. It is the intention of Our Lady's Hospital, Crumlin, to make an appointment to the vacant post in the near future in order to restore levels of service to patients. I am aware that a meeting has been held with members of AD-HD support groups to discuss the situation and that a further contact is planned.
