Vol. 501 No. 6

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

Michael Ring

Question:

269 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will allocate a special grant to improve the condition of the road to Thallabawn, Killeen, Louisburgh, County Mayo; and the grants, if any, available for this work. [6653/99]

The maintenance-improvement of non-national roads in its area is a matter for Mayo County Council, to be funded from its own resources, supplemented by allocations from the local government fund. Mayo County Council has been allocated a total of £11,009,000 in non-national roads grants in 1999, an increase of 13 per cent on the initial allocation figure for 1998 of £9,770,000. The initial selection of work projects in County Mayo to which the various categories of non-national roads grants may be applied is a matter for Mayo County Council and my Department has no direct role in this matter.

Non-national road grants for 1999 have been allocated and there are no further funds at the disposal of my Department from which further grants could be made available to county councils.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

270 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the situation regarding the proposed road repairs on the route from Edenderry to Enfield; if he will make funds available to Kildare County Council for the purposes of carrying out repairs to this road; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6655/99]

The maintenance-improvement of non-national roads in their area is a matter for Kildare and Offaly County Councils, to be funded from their own resources, supplemented by allocations from the local government fund. Kildare and Offaly County Councils' non-national roads grants allocations for 1999 of £8.055 million and £4.397 million represent increases of 14 per cent and 15 per cent respectively on their original 1998 allocations.

The initial selection of works-projects in Kildare and Offaly to which the various categories of non-national road grants may be applied is a matter for the county councils concerned and my Department has no direct role in this matter.
Non-national road grants for 1999 have been allocated and there are no funds at the disposal of my Department from which a further grant could be made available to county councils.
