Vol. 501 No. 6

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Seán Ryan

Question:

286 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will recommend that road safety advertisements on the proper use of roundabouts be commissioned for television and schools in view of the number of motorists who do not know how to negotiate a roundabout in safety. [6879/99]

Responsibility for developing and disseminating road safety advertisements and publicity is assigned to the National Safety Council. I understand that the council has available a specific publication entitled Roundabout Ahead which relates to the safe use of roundabouts. I will arrange for copies of the publication to be placed in the Oireachtas Library.

As part of its contribution to the Government's Strategy on Road Safety, 1998 to 2002, the council is also preparing new resource material for input into the primary school curriculum and new material and programmes for the post-primary sector.

Detailed instructions on how to negotiate a roundabout in safety are also set out in the Rules of the Road booklet published by my Department.
